KV-2

I'm modelling this build inspired by a single photo of a KV-2 veteran from Leningrad '43. The tank in the photo is a bit unusual for several reasons. Most KV-2 were out of action in 41, there are no photos of KV-2s with turret markings, this KV hull has applique armor plates welded to the sides. No KV-2s had these plates so they are either an add-on or a standard KV-1 had a turret replaced.

I'm using this photo as inspiration but am not trying to replicate it. The hull and running gear are from my KV-2-2-2 build that I have abandoned out of frustration.

I still need to add a few small details like lights and tow ropes.

Nice work Bryan, but what went wrong with Comrade Stalin's glorious Land Battleship? :o

KV Guru Neil Stokes writes that some of the final KV-2 made in mid 1941 had the applique armour, or at least the side plates. Nonetheless it's quite amazing to see one left in service by 1943.

Thanks. The turret kept giving me problems. It had some very prominent seams, more like troughs that I filled with Tamiya grey putty. Every time I thought I was done, the putty would eventually shrink. I did one final application, sanded, primered, and it looked good. I applied the color coat and the sinks showed up again. After that I gave up on the project.

The history of 528 in the photo can be found here:

That sounds familiar. I had to re-do the filled in vision ports on my BT-2 two times and there's still a noticeable sink mark...

I've also had problems with Tamiya putty lately. Glad it's not just me. ;) My last two tubes have had a different consistency than I'm used to. The putty seems to be shiny and stringy and shrinks way too much. Perhaps Tamiya has changed the formula?

They should just paint a big old bright spot on the turret. Its so big its calling to be shot at. The build looks good.

Thanks Shawn.

Construction finished and primer applied. What a beast. I'm not a big fan of the standard KV-2 but a beat up one with extra armor. Yeah, I'm in!

Another one is making some progress again. Just a black shadow coat. Not sure on the final paint for this one but I ordered one of those AB mottled stencils to give it a try.
