Thank you Vincent
Regrettably it didn't stay that way, when I tried to fix the pigments in place with Tamiya thinner and then a layer of flat clear, most of it mysteriously disappeared. So here's the second attempt, this time fixed in place with turpentine. Not absolutely fixed, but good enough for the moment. Not entirely sure if I should try a wash on top of that or another potentially ruinous clear coat...
Still needs a bit extra work to get it back as it was before...

Just thinking Phil, you could use this to your advantage. It does rain in the desert, little bit of "rain streaking" might be appealing.....would cover up any mottling due to the fixing process.

Interesting suggestion Adam. A "winter" desert vehicle is definitely on my long term projects list. There's a nice photo of a Panzer III in thick mud with a bunch of British POWs in winter greatcoats sitting on top....
As far as the 223 is concerned, I'm still hoping for a "dry" scheme. To my surprise and relief, a new coat of flat clear went on without problems and now the whole pigments affair is securely sealed in place for further weathering. As I mentioned before, the ochre pigments are really just the "base coat", with lighter dust going on top.
Slowly getting there...

Well, what better do to on the hottest day of the year (so far...) than to weather a desert vehicle....

Don't worry, I still have to fix them in place, which will greatly reduce the overall intensity of the dust and add more contrast. Hopefully.

The dust effect looks nice as it is Philipp.
I especially like the wheels, from what I can see that is

Thanks Vincent
I improved the contrast on the photo a little, in reality it was more like a huge featureless blob of yellow dust
Didn't get anything done today, but I think I might be finished with the 223 itself on the weekend. The figure and other extras will take a little longer, not to mention the piece of desert I want to put underneath

Thanks Raoul! I angered the thunder god, who smote my internet connection with lightning last Friday. I also angered the mobile phone god, who cursed me with error messages during each upload attempt....
Anyhow, the 223 itself is done now, just the figure and stowage left to finish.
