Re: Heuschrecke IVb, "Grasshopper"
Thanks guys
New technology for me, posting from my mobile in Witherspoons, with the in-laws after visiting the cemetery.,
Got some priming and PE done, removable turret without the 105 mm howitzer
Some small cameo pieces to add some depth to the scenario
As these are the spare parts from just one Pz IV A kit, I think I will need a bigger base for all the bits that will be scattered round!
and discovered some shortfalls in the kit and the Voyager PE set
There just aren't enough ammo storage bins in either the kit or the Voyager set, so you have to use both!
Lots of little bits of PE to add to the Grasshopper. Some of the early ones
I have glued up all the wheels, cogs, and lifting stuff, the Dragon kit has "forgotten"
Probably As they used the Aberdeen vehicle as a base, which has none of the lifting gubbins!
I should have soldered them! but "NO "
As there was no damage to be inflicted, glue will do! Big mistake!
Even dropping any one of the wheels or cogs onto the cutting mat caused it to completely dismantle!!
The glue stuck to me, the mat, and absolutely anything else but the 2 pieces of PE.
I got there in the end, but will need some proper heat sinks for next time!
They arrived too late, and don't look anywhere as cool as the ones Adam got from Jamcar
As the garage is habitable, I got some paint on the walls of the factory too
I am sure you are asking why it is red outside and sand inside
I shall try 2 different ways to doing brick,
one is to use pigment to add the cement between the red painted bricks
The other is to dry brush in shades of brick red, over a cement coloured base.
We will see which looks best
next for the factory is to get the handrail on the stairs and prime them
Next on the Grasshopper is the fenders and which will be soldered not glued!
Then paint???
But what hue of dungelgelb????
Choices choices???
Thanks for popping by
Regards
Steve H

Ammo bins look great, almost ashamed to cover them up with the paint.
I will be curious to see how the brick experiment works. I have been debating how to pint mine for some time. I was going the dry brushing route, so I can wait to see how your turns out.

Nice work Steve. This will look quite impressive when it's done
I'm looking forward to see the walls painted, I have no idea which method is better...except maybe getting a huge sack of bricks and building the walls piece by piece

Terrific progress Steve. Those ammo bins are excellent. This build is coming together nicely.

Could you use an oil was between the red bricks for the cement? Something like the Mig washable dust?

Re: Heuschrecke IVb, "Grasshopper"
The buildings looks very, very nice already and I'm reeeeally interested to which "brick-version" turns out better one *preparesnotepad* .
Keep also in mind that we really don't have many actual examples of the various dark yellows since the ones we do have are and where subject to 70 years of environmental influences (it's also not particularly helpful that actual colours that carry the RAL numbers have changed since the war... ), though there are some enlightening cases providing some insight, such as the initial type G StuG III that as pulled from a swamp in the vicinity of Pskov on 2013. =>

Keep in mind that this StuG still sports remains of a whitewash, but when it came out of the swamp it was pretty much completely preserved. Of course by now it's been weathered for the past 4 years... and it's fairly unlikely to say the least that a vehicle endured 4 years during the war... doubly so with an unchanged paint job. But the video of the initial salvaging shows a StuG (and more important in this case a Dunkelgelb) pretty much as it would have appeared around late 43/early 44. We could say it came from the swamp in mint and unopened condition with the collectors value intact... though it's been opened and played with ever since .
Best regards
Raoul G. Kunz
Since we're here dealing with a 1944 Heuschrecke 10 on the regular PzKpfw III/IV chassis, not the one on a shortened version from '42, I'd go with whatever Dunkelgelb you feel appropriate since supply was already becoming erratic and unpredictable at this stage, courtesy of strategic bombing campaign of the RAF and AAF and of course the ever so unhelpful fact that the eastern front was creeping steadily in the direction of and past the Polish border towards the eastern provinces of Prussia and with that the number of official and unofficial variations of the standard three tone pattern colours proliferated, simply because the availability of ingredients or the lack thereof. But what hue of dungelgelb????

Re: Heuschrecke IVb, "Grasshopper"
Found a site with the photos of the salvaging operation, though they are...small...
However they do give a nice impression of the colours, especially the last one =>

Re: Heuschrecke IVb, "Grasshopper"
Another update
Thanks for the Dungelgelb directive Raoul
Brick work could be on for this week, but paint seems to back on the go too
Masking the interior, never painted an interior before, never made an interior that needed painting before either, so new ground being broken here.
I shall continue to create firsts when I do the weathering, chipping and stuff
Off to the Flammpanzer II, yep I have an update there too
Thanks for popping by
