Thanks for popping by Philipp
Definitively drowning in sand, I just need to check on sand wave photos, choose a wind direction and dry off some sand to fill the hole once the T-55 has been interred.
As for the rust effect Adam, a basic dark brown base coat then pigments for texture and a new product I have seen on You Tube which gives really great results.

Dirty down rust effects
Next will be getting the AB to work after a long rest with the record breaking 40.2 C recent weather.
So, schedule of works
1st, a coat of paint on the T-55, then texture with pigments
Coat the base in lightweight filler mixed with sand to create the desert base
Dry more sand to fill the hole once the T-55 has been painted
Hope it all comes together reasonably quickly
More soon?

The Dirty Down products look interesting. Can’t get them here in NZ unfortunately. I suspect (could be wrong) that it’s a solution of iron powder with an oxidizing agent. Ammo’s version appears to be a two step process of the above. ;)

Hi Adam
Apparently the Dirty Down range is stocked by
Art Department Supplies
2 Salmon St,
Port Melbourne
VIC 3207,
Australia
The web site has a Health and Safety section but you need to be a chemist to decipher the technicalese!
Some little progress, with tile grout and very orange builders sand, the base was covered.

and sand waves sculpted into the desert.

The base coat for the T-55 is the dark base from the primer set
Image
The rust will be pigments and the Dirty Down.

The base it still drying and will need a few cracks filling,
Hopefully more soon?

Back again and it has been ............ awhile!

Sorry for the late reply Adam!
The T-54 has been primed with the Hataka red primer set, I'll AB some lighter shades then use the rust product Dirty Down, after a little experimenting.

Where I am now

I have a good reason/excuse, we adopted 2 part Bengal 10 week old kittens and they have taken over everything including my work desk!

Image

So where am I with this one?

The figures are done, 6 out of 2 packs of Italeri IDF paratroopers, which were added into an E-bay purchase of a Vulcan 1/35 2Lb British Anti Tank gun, so free bees, as the whole lot was the cheapest I had seen the 2lber at for a long time.

I have replaced 5 of the heads with a set of Hornet IDF Para heads. The 6th is A.N. other Hornet head with one of the helmets from the set.

I've mixed and matched the arms to alter the figures up a little and changed the "step" one of the pair of striding figures so they don't look too much the same.

The heads do look a little small but as the Paras are all loaded with Flak vests and a full load of kit, perhaps not too unreasonable?

This has all been done in 30 minutes here and there over the past 8 weeks.

The base has had some of the cracks filled and been sanded, primed and grey coated ready for stage 2.

I think I'll need a tub of a proprietary "sand" paste to create the foot prints and help back fill the hole the T-54 has been buried in.

So some photos of the stop/start progress.

The base

Image

Image

I was short on some of the kit as 1 of the 2 boxes had been stripped of all the equipment.

I made copies using a Green Stuff product as shown on You Tube by Plasmo,

I filled the moulds with Tamiya Standard 2 part epoxy putty and trimmed and sanded them once they were dry.

They turned out OK for a first attempt and it will be a useful tool for future creating small parts.

All the figures shoulder joints and the 2 arm adjustments were filled with black flexi superglue, which can be cleaned with extra thin Tamiya glue after 10/15 minutes and/or sanded for the larger areas where the black glue was used as a filler.

So the current position, and a "loose" layout for the figures.

The patrol are being Contacted/Calling in?

whilst stopping at the Derelict T54.

The party poopers for my hobby time and their "new" mum

I am currently sanding/scribing/cleaning up the weapons, and will made foil straps and fine wire buckles for all the ordnance.

The Italeri set has loads of "stuff" in it including rocket launchers!

I have now ""painted"" myself into a corner with the figures and need to get them and the heads all primed for paint.

The garage is going to be too cold this week for any AB work on the T-54 and base, but hopefully the base will get done soon ish?

Thanks for popping by

I did say I was a terrible blogger!

More soon?

Wow, Steve, you have been busy :D

Ok, the important question first. What are the kitten's names? They look so cute.

I haven't tried the Hataka paints before. What are they like?

I think the heads look fine on the figures. They are not out of proportion to my eyes.

This project is going to be impressive when you finish it.

Cheers,
Vincent

Hi Vincent
Thanks for popping by
The calico kitten, (ginger patch on her head) is Betty.
The other grey/silver tabby top 1/2, is George.
A serious handful the pair are, chewing everything as they are both teething, and getting into every nook and crany in the house, no matter how well we think we have blocked everything up!
As for the figures, it has literally been 30 minutes here and there for the past 6 weeks, perhaps just cleaning the seams on an arm and rescribing the fingers.
I still have all the weapons to do, but might as well get them primed and zenithal highlighted and get the paints out too.
The Hataka paints are really good and behave well in my H&S AB with just a little thinner.
They are usually in a set of complimentary colours for whatever scheme you are painting and are a competitive price against other sets on the market at the moment.
They do 3 types of paint too, so make sure you get the right type.
Red for AB
Blue for brush
Orange is lacquer paint
They have a PDF colour chart and a good web site to clarify which type of paint is best for the paint job you want.
HTH's?
As for finishing?
I have until New Years eve, lets see how it goes LOL
As the UK economy is crumbling, we could face power rationing and enforced blackouts as the winter gets closer.
We shall see
Thanks for popping by
More soon?

Thanks, Steve.
It sounds like Betty and George are doing what kittens love to do.

I'll look into the Hataka paints some more. I've seen them advertised before but wasn't sure if they were any good. Thanks for your feedback.

Yes, plenty of time to finish, no pressure.

Cheers,
Vincent

Hi Shawn
Its been in my desk untouched since September
The kittens and redecorating had taken up all my time until I passed the deadline with yet another GB :(
Once I get over the "flu", I might just get a chance to look at all the failed GB shelf queens, packed away, Somewhere :?
You do seem to be making some progress with your builds, buildings and figures too in 2022
Have a good 2023
