Panzerspähwagen M8(a)

Post by Philipp Gross »

Alright folks, let's dive right in. Bought this today on a whim and decided to add another group build entry. This shouldn't take very long

Image

For obvious reasons the Wehrmacht didn't get a lot of American stuff in their inventory. One of the more common Beute vehicles however was the Greyhound, and that's just what I'm about to do:

Image

This and a few other pictures can be found at the usual source. I'm not yet certain if I'll make an exact replica of this vehicle or a more generic example, having some much needed fun is the main exercise here

However, I'll be adding a few bits of etch along the way. Most likely only tool brackets and headlight guards.

Just like the BT kits, this is all extremely well engineered. What you see here is a single part:

And before you know it, the running gear is complete:

...which is basically over half of the kit:

More tomorrow!

Thanks Shaun! Definitely a nice kit, not quite as perfect as the BTs but that's to be expected from a 1998 kit. :)

The Tamiya interior very basic in this kit. Any plans to show it with the hatches open?

I think I'll have the driver's hatch partly open, with a figure at the wheel. But besides that, no, I don't think I'll do much with the interior.

Thanks Vincent! :) But it always slows down once paint is involved

Got the...uhm..."hull" finished now.

Image

About half the time was used up by carving a driver from various bits found in the uncharted depths of my spares box... The fact that the roof with the turret race simply plugs into the hull is fantastic. Makes painting the interior so much easier :D

Image

The turret will have to wait a little longer since I ordered a turned barrel for it, should arrive within a few days.

Turns out I could assemble the whole turret minus the gun, which is put in right at the end. So this is as far as I can go without the barrel, which will hopefully arrive tomorrow:

Looking nice and the barrel should pop up here within the next two days.

That aside I thought I'd add the trivia/suggestion we discussed today: why not build it for the BGS (Bundes Grenz Schutz - nominally only border police, factually another army of light forces throughout the 60s-80s, today it's no more and has become federal police) ... it certainly looked like late war formations  ...=>

Yeah.. this is Border Police alright...

It's probably too late for this build, but I'll keep that in mind for the next Greyhound I get my hands on

But yes, the BGS was for all intents and purposes the first army of post-war Germany, being created in 1950, 6 years before the appearance of the Bundeswehr. After 1956 it was kept in place because until 1968 the Bundeswehr was strictly forbidden to be used for internal security purposes.... Once that problem was out of the way thanks to a number of highly controversial emergency laws, the BGS quickly turned into a more regular police force, usually kept in reserve for more delicate tasks than the local police could handle (the GSG9 for example was part of it).
